Neukölln knows without warning, before the Baustellenschild is put up, torn down, put up again, before the machinery arrives, digging deeper into the bedrock, shifting the foundation, altering the nature of us, rewriting history. Letters forming words, forming sentences, forming collective thoughts layered onto the walls: “mieten runter,” “kiez bleibt,” “neubau für wen?” bombed with the throwup “KAFKA”, until the words (and logic) break down with them. Silbersteinstr. 80 was reconstructed from the last remnants of this tiled façade belonging to a demolished home in the kiez I used to live in. The Metamorphosis
